EOC Folding @ Home - Stats News & Updates

Slight glitch...09.24.04, 2:03pm CST
Well there was a slight glitch in the stats, actually it was more of an error with the data from stanford. Anyhow, all is fixed, nothing was messed up.

The only thing you guys probably saw was the "Processing" note in the corner was there a lot longer than usual.

Haven't ran the update yet...08.26.04, 8:55pm CST
Just letting you guys know, I haven't ran the big update yet. I actually dumped the data and loaded it onto another dev machine, just incase something goes haywire I don't want to loose all the precious stats info.

So yeah, I basically took a plain vanilla linux install and started loading the data on the other machine. I can't say exactly when it finished loading, but it took many many hours. I guess the combination of forgetting to tweak the MySQL my.cnf and using a very old hard drive took its toll.

On the up side, I just realized that I can probably optimize some of the query loops with more efficient date handling in the query itself. Not 100% sure though, I still have to look at the code.

It's slow going, but I'm really swamped with stuff. I've been trying to work on the Folding Stats (this site), Trader Ratings (an add-on for vBulletin), MyRig v2 (another add-on for vBulletin), reviews & artciels for EOC, job searching & interviews, and the list goes on and on...

Oh yeah, if you haven't noticed yet, Stanford released a new version of the F@H client, they are now up to version 5.02 which the changes from 5.00 are:

- Error checking on queue, related to big packet option.

- bsd elf conversion bug fix

Some changes requiring downtime...08.20.04, 9:30pm CST
Sometime (hopefully this Saturday) I'm planning on making some changes to the database for storing additional info, and also cleaning up some of the old data. While it is going on the stats will not be accessible, it should just give an error page saying I'm working on them. I can't give a time estimate, could be an hour, could be several, though I'm going to try and squeeze it in the 3hr time window between updates. *crosses fingers*

Also, version 5.0 of the Folding@Home client has been released. You can download it from the Stanford site. I'm not sure how long the 4.0 clients will continue to work (never came across any info about it), but the new ones have a lot more options and capabilities so it's best to upgrade as soon as possible.

Oh yeah, I get questions from time to time with people asking questions about how much data is being stored and everything. So here's a few stats as of today:

- 1,331 Updates have been processed since v2 came online. (8 updates per day)
- 2,000 Teams
- 1.4 Million rows of historical team data
- 99,000 Users
- 21.6 Million rows of historical user data

So yeah, there's quite a bit of data there to play with. If you are wondering why some of the numbers don't work out if you multiply them, it's because info is not stored if points or rank does not change (to save space). A lot of the data on the graphs, summary pages, etc are generated in real-time... I'm amazed that it works as fast as it does... Imagine if it was physical papers, having to sift through 20+ million pages, pulling dozens (if not hundreds) of numbers at a time, hundreds of time every second!

A Few Tweaks...08.19.04, 7:36pm CST
I'm not sure what is going on with Stanford, but I have noticed on more than one occation lately that there has been a problem getting stats data.

I had to tweak the processing files a little to do some file checking and to attempt to re-download the file if it was too small. So now if I see an update failed I can re-run it and have it re-download the files.

Anyhow, it's not really that big of an issue. But if something really weird happens during the next couple updates, I'm willing to bet it's related to my changes. ;)

Doing Some Backend Work...08.16.04, 10:59pm CST
I've been doing some "behind the scenes" stuff lately, mostly code cleanup, data checking, and query optimization. I've still got to dig around on the MySQL site some more, hopefully I can find a few tips when querying date related info to get the # of queries down on some of the pages.

I got a new book, hopefully it will have some fresh information on MySQL. It's called "High Performance MySQL". Here's a link to it if anyone is interested, I'll post my comments on the book after I get a chance to read it:

I updated the footer some, mostly just for my own reference, but it now has an "official" folding stats version, and also some basic page generation stats.

For some reason the server load has increased a little after adding the stuff for query times, I don't know why but I'll have to keep an eye on it, worst thing I can always revert back to the old code.

Still lots to do, but I've only got two hands. Next on the list is some data consolidation. I need to summarize down some of the old data to reduce the amount stored in the database. Then *maybe* implement the sortable columns, or perhaps a better "milestones" page.

Good Luck To Everyone!!!

A couple small things added / changed.08.06.04, 1:38pm CST
I re-did the headers a little, using two rows and a smaller font to make things a little less crowded. This is to make room for the up/down arrows for sorting columns.

Also, I added a Last 7 Months Production table in the Team & User Summary. This way people can see some long-term production numbers.

XML Updates...08.04.04, 12:03pm CST
I made a slight change to the user_summary.php XML file. It now includes the all team info.

Also for teams that don't have user info, there is now a team_summary.php file. Here is an example:

More updates to come... ;)

Bug Fix For Opera Users...08.02.04, 11:16am CST
A big thanks to Gerby19 for pointing out that Opera 7.x doesn't show the popups unless you switch it to identify itself as IE.

He even went and did some research to find out that there is a patch for the current version of overLIB. (The next version of overLIB is supposed to include the fix, so we shouldn't have to worry about it happening in the future.)

So now all you Opera users should be able to see the popups when you set your browser agent to Opera. ;)

Two Updates In One Day!07.30.04, 3:28pm CST
Must be a miracle or something... ;) Anyhow, I added the little javascript popups for percentages of various info on the Team & User list pages. Just move your mouse around on the page and you will see what I'm talking about. I checked the pages in IE & Firefox, but I'm pretty confident they should work in other browsers as well. Please let me know if you encounter any bugs.

Keep in mind that these numbers are only relative to the data that I am storing (top 2,000 teams), even at that most of the numbers are pretty small, so please don't complain.

I should of been doing other things today, but I figured what the heck.

Oh yeah, incase you are wondering how the popup things are done, it is with a nifty library called overLIB. It is pretty easy to implement, and highly configurable.
